Transfers and splits
Transfers between your accounts
Moving money from checking to savings, or paying a credit card, is a transfer. It changes two account balances and no categories.
To record one, choose Transfer (the transfer icon over the account list, or in the Accounts menu). Pensum records both halves: money out of one account and into the other, each categorized as Transfers.
If both halves came in from your bank (or an import), categorize each as Transfers (under Built in, when you choose a category).
The two halves should cancel out. If they don't (one half is missing, or the amounts differ), the budget shows Unbalanced transfers. Click it to see them.

Splitting a transaction
One purchase, several categories, such as a warehouse store run that's part groceries, part household supplies:
- Open the transaction.
- In the category, choose Split into multiple categories…
- Add a line for each category with its amount. The lines have to add up to the total.

A split whose lines add up to zero just moves money between categories, so Pensum offers to make it a reassignment instead.
Refunds and returns
A refund is money coming back. Categorize it to the category the purchase came from, and that category gets the money back. Don't categorize refunds as income.
