Budgeting a month ahead
Normally, income counts toward the month it arrives in. You can mark income to count toward next month instead. Then you budget each month on the first, with money you already have.
It helps most when:
- you're paid near the end of the month, and the money is really for next month's bills;
- your income is irregular, and you want each month funded before it starts.
Mark income for next month
When you categorize income, choose Income for next month instead of Income for this month. It counts toward next month's Left to assign. A split paycheck can do the same: choose it on every income line.
Getting there
You can't switch all at once: the month you start would have nothing in it. Instead, move forward a little at a time:
- Start with the last paycheck of a month. If this month is already fully assigned without it, mark it Income for next month.
- Over the next few months, use extra income, such as a bonus or a third paycheck, to cover more of each month ahead.
- Once a whole month's income arrives before the month starts, mark every paycheck for next month.
