Help · Getting started

Installing the app and notifications

There's nothing to download from an app store, and it's always the latest version. Installed or not, it's the same Pensum and the same budget.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Open Pensum in Safari and sign in.
  2. Tap Share, then Add to Home Screen, then Add.
  3. Open Pensum from its new icon.

On Android

  1. Open Pensum in Chrome and sign in.
  2. Tap the menu (⋮), then Add to Home screen or Install app.

On a computer

In Chrome or Edge, open Pensum and click the install icon at the right end of the address bar (or find Install in the browser's menu). Pensum then opens in its own window and from your Dock, Start menu or app launcher.

Notifications

Pensum can let you know when there are new transactions to review, usually ones bank sync just brought in. They're off until you turn them on, and they're kept quiet:

To turn them on, answer Yes, notify me when Pensum asks on your review list, or go to Settings, then Notifications, then Turn on. Your browser then asks for permission. They're set for each device, so turn them on wherever you want them. Send a test checks they arrive.

To turn them off, use Turn off in Settings. Signing out turns them off for that device too.

If Pensum says notifications are blocked, they were turned down in the browser. Allow them in the browser's settings for pensumbudget.com, then turn them on in Settings.

Opening bank files

On a computer with Pensum installed from Chrome or Edge, you can open a file from your bank (QFX, OFX, QIF or CSV) straight into Pensum: right-click it, choose Open with, then Pensum. The import opens with the file already chosen. The first time, your browser asks whether Pensum may open files.

Without a connection

Pensum needs a connection to show your budget, so your numbers are always current. Opened offline, it says so, with a button to try again.
