Adding and closing accounts

Add an account

Choose + over the account list on Transactions (on phones, in the Accounts menu), then:

The balance becomes a starting-balance entry on that date and goes into Left to assign, ready to give jobs to. A credit card's balance is money already spent, so it's subtracted instead. See Credit cards.

Why the starting date matters

Imported and synced transactions dated before an account's starting date are skipped: they're already counted in its starting balance. So if you plan to import history, add the account with the balance from the start of that history, not today's.

Edit, reconcile or close an account

Choose the pencil beside an account (or Edit under the account list when it's selected) to rename it, reconcile it, or close it.

Close account when you stop using one, such as a paid-off card or a closed bank account. Its history stays in your reports; it just leaves the account list. Bring it back with Show closed accounts under the list, then Reopen account.

Accounts you don't budget from

Retirement, investment and loan accounts usually stay out of a zero-based budget: you don't spend from them day to day. Record what you put into them as spending from a savings category or a transfer, whichever matches how you think about it.
