Glossary
Activity. What happened in a category this month: spending, refunds, and money reassigned in or out.
Assigned. The money you gave a category this month.
Available. What a category has left to spend: carried in, plus assigned, plus activity. Red means overspent.
Carried in. What a month starts with from the month before: in Left to assign, and in each category set to carry forward.
Carry forward. A month-end rule: the category keeps its balance into next month. See Month-end rules.
Category type. Spending, Sinking, Savings or Holding: what a category's money is for. See Category types.
Cleared. The bank has the transaction. Imported and synced transactions arrive cleared.
Extra income. Money you don't plan on, like a bonus or a tax refund, kept in a Holding category marked as extra income. See Extra income.
Fully assigned. Every dollar has a job: Left to assign is zero.
Holding. A category type for money earmarked for a purpose, like a bonus you haven't decided about, or money you're waiting to be paid back.
Left to assign. Money that doesn't have a job yet. See Left to assign.
Needs review. Imported or synced transactions waiting for you to approve them. See Reviewing imported transactions.
Over-assigned. You've assigned more than you have. See Left to assign is negative.
Reassignment. Money moved from one category to others. See Overspending and reassigning.
Reconciled. Confirmed against the bank's balance. See Reconciling an account.
Savings. A category type for money meant to grow, like an emergency fund.
Sinking fund. A category that saves a little each month for a bigger or irregular cost, like property taxes or car repairs.
Split. One transaction divided across several categories. See Transfers and splits.
Start fresh. A month-end rule: the category starts each month at zero, and what was left (or overspent) goes to (or comes from) Left to assign.
Target. An amount a Savings or Sinking category is working toward, optionally by a date. See Targets and goals.
Transfer. Money moving between your own accounts. It doesn't touch any category. See Transfers and splits.
